Energy

The sector at a glance

Energy is the business of producing, moving, storing and selling power and fuel — oil and gas from wellhead through pipeline to refinery, electricity from generator through transmission to meter, and the fast-growing middle layer of batteries, demand response and software that makes an increasingly intermittent grid behave. Texas is the center of gravity: ERCOT is the only large grid in the US that is its own interconnection and its own regulator's problem, the Permian Basin is the most productive oilfield on earth, and Texas leads the country in installed wind, utility-scale solar and grid batteries simultaneously. Buyers here are almost never 'energy people' in the abstract — they are plant and facility managers hedging a load, developers chasing an interconnection slot, landowners weighing a lease or a royalty, EPC and O&M firms bidding work, procurement officers signing a PPA, and homeowners comparing an installer's proposal against a retail electricity plan. They buy against price risk, uptime, permitting timelines and payback math, not against ideology.
